African Music Workshops
We offer workshops in Classical African Music. The workshops include explaining and demonstrating a variety of African instruments ranging from Djembe drums, slit drums, talking drums, marimbas, mbiras and percussion instruments.
Our group of youngsters were trained by Prof Nzewi from the Music Department, University of Pretoria. These young men toured Europe extensively to play with major Symphony Orchestras abroad, and presented workshops throughout Africa. Their mission is to promote the benefits of African instruments as explained by Prof. Nzewi.
Through the art of African Music Instruments, the lives of people are touched in a very special way. Prof. Meki Nzewi explains:
“At a general level one needs to note that in the first instance the technology and materials of the varieties of African indigenous drums have scientific healing rationalizations as well as potencies such that vibrations produced by a typical African drum sound for instance effect mind and body therapy. Then at the level of the conformation of music and dance structures the drum ensemble music were originally configured as intangible agency that transacted humanity bonding and attitude formation/reformation”. In short, it is the science of materials and structures and artistry that capacitate indigenous musical arts models as the affective-effective manager and healer of humanity as well as societal systems when given the chance.
